Wetang’ula urges vigilance after Malaha junction tragic crash
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged motorists to be vigilant and exercise caution following the tragic accident at Malaha Junction along the Webuye–Kitale Road, which claimed 14 lives and left dozens injured.
In a statement on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Wetang’ula said that road carnage remains a serious concern for the nation, especially during this heavy rainy season.
“I urge all road users to exercise caution and vigilance, and call upon traffic law enforcers to strengthen safety measures to help prevent such tragedies. The tragic accident at Malaha Junction along the Webuye–Kitale road, which has claimed several lives and left many families in mourning, is a painful reminder that even one life lost on our roads is one too many,” he wrote on X.
The multiple‑vehicle crash occurred around 9:45 pm on Monday, March 9, 2026, when two motorcycles collided head-on near the Malaha area.
Both riders were reported to have died instantly. Shortly afterwards, a trailer truck lost control, ploughing into bystanders and nearby vehicles, causing further casualties.

According to Western Region Traffic Police Commander Walter Cheboren, the driver of the trailer is said to have fled the scene immediately after the crash.
“10 pedestrians died on the spot, while four others succumbed to injuries after being rushed to the hospital. Sixteen others were admitted with serious injuries,” he said.
Police confirmed the collision involved multiple vehicles, including a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and boda bodas, creating a devastating chain reaction. The bodies of the deceased were moved to Webuye Sub-County Hospital mortuary, awaiting identification and autopsy.
Survivors were taken to hospitals in the Webuye area, where they are currently receiving treatment, while the area traffic police immediately began clearing the wreckage to restore traffic along the busy highway.
Moreover, in a statement, Westlands Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi expressed deep sorrow following the tragedy, sending condolences to families who lost their loved ones in the accident.

Wanyonyi described the incident as heartbreaking and urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly at known accident blackspots and busy junctions.
“This tragedy is a sobering reminder of the fragility of life. I urge all road users to exercise extreme caution and vigilance,” he said.
“I urge all motorists and road users to exercise extreme caution and vigilance, particularly at known blackspots and busy junctions. Safety must always be our primary concern,” he added.
Malaha Junction has previously been flagged by motorists as a risky section of the Webuye-Kitale road due to heavy traffic and frequent high-speed vehicles.
