President William Ruto has announced a major infrastructure package for Meru County, including the construction and upgrading of 252 kilometres of roads and a Ksh7 billion allocation for the Nithi Bridge project, aimed at enhancing connectivity, boosting trade and supporting economic growth across the region.

Speaking on Saturday, July 11, 2026, during the burial of Mzee Patrick M’Anaiba Baikilanya, the father of Igembe North MP Julius Taitumu, at Kaelo in Meru County, the President said the government was prioritising strategic infrastructure projects to improve transport networks and unlock the county’s economic potential.

Ruto noted that the planned road projects would ease the movement of people and goods, lower transportation costs for farmers and traders, and improve access to markets, particularly in key agricultural zones.

The President said the Nithi Bridge project, which will receive Ksh7 billion in government funding, is among the flagship developments expected to enhance safety and strengthen regional connectivity.

Alongside the infrastructure investments, Ruto announced the deployment of 200 additional police officers to address insecurity and curb livestock theft in affected parts of Meru County.

He assured residents that the government was determined to eliminate cattle rustling, a challenge that has persisted in some areas for many years.

“When we encountered security challenges here, particularly involving criminals and livestock thieves, I deployed an additional 200 police officers. Do not worry; we will bring an end to cattle theft and criminal activities in this region,” the President said.

Ruto revealed that he had consulted local leaders on the security situation and agreed on measures aimed at restoring peace and protecting livelihoods.

“I have held discussions with your leaders and we have agreed on a course of action. The necessary measures are already in place because it is unacceptable that, more than six decades later, communities are still grappling with cattle theft,” he said.

The Head of State emphasised that improved security would complement ongoing infrastructure investments, creating a favourable environment for business, agriculture and development.

Ruto was in Meru County to join family members, leaders and residents in celebrating the life of Mzee Baikilanya, whom he described as a hardworking, inspirational and respected community leader.

“We celebrate the long and remarkable life of Mzee Patrick M’Anaiba Baikilanya. He was hardworking, inspiring and an exemplary role model whose impact can be seen across many communities,” he said.

The President also extended his condolences to the bereaved family, assuring them of the government’s support during the mourning period.

The burial ceremony attracted political leaders from Meru and neighbouring counties, many of whom paid tribute to the late Baikilanya for his contribution to community development and the positive influence he had on generations of residents.
