KMPDU mourns death of Makueni ENT surgeon Dr Peter Otieno Ochung’o

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has announced the sudden death of Peter Otieno Ochung’o, the Head of the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgery at Makueni County Referral Hospital, describing his passing as a major loss to Kenya’s medical fraternity.

In a condolence statement issued on Saturday, July 11, 2026, KMPDU said the respected ENT surgeon and committed union member had dedicated his career to advancing quality healthcare and serving patients in Makueni County and beyond.

“The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) mourns the sudden passing of Dr. Peter Otieno Ochung’o, Head of the Department of ENT Surgery at Makueni County Referral Hospital and a committed member of KMPDU, Makueni Branch,” the union said in its statement.

Who Was Peter Otieno Ochung’o?

Peter Otieno Ochung’o was a leading ENT surgeon serving as the Head of the Department of ENT Surgery at Makueni County Referral Hospital. He was also an active member of KMPDU’s Makueni Branch and was widely respected for his contribution to public healthcare, medical leadership and patient care.

According to KMPDU, Ochung’o’s work exemplified professionalism and excellence in medicine.

“Dr. Ochung’o was a respected ENT surgeon whose professionalism, leadership, and dedication to public service reflected the highest standards of medical practice,” the statement noted.

His leadership in ENT healthcare made him a key figure in the delivery of specialised medical services at Makueni County Referral Hospital, one of the region’s major public healthcare facilities.

KMPDU pays tribute to fallen surgeon

KMPDU said the doctor’s death has left a significant void among healthcare workers, patients and residents of Makueni County.

“His passing is a profound loss to his family, colleagues, the people of Makueni County, and the medical fraternity,” the union stated.

The union praised his commitment to serving the public and highlighted the impact he made throughout his medical career. Colleagues remember him as a dedicated healthcare professional whose expertise and compassion improved the lives of countless patients.

On behalf of its National Executive Council, members, branch leadership and staff, KMPDU extended its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late surgeon.

The union said it stands in solidarity with all those mourning the loss of the respected medical practitioner during this difficult period.

“We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all who mourn his passing. We stand in solidarity with them during this difficult time,” KMPDU said.

The death of Ochung’o represents a significant loss to specialised healthcare services in Makueni County and Kenya’s broader medical sector.
