Raila Odinga’s son, Raila Odinga Junior, has been formally installed as the head of the Odinga family in a traditional ceremony at Opoda Farm in Bondo on Thursday, October 23, 2025. The event marked a moment of continuity and legacy for one of Kenya’s most influential political dynasties.

During the ceremony, Raila Jr underwent a traditional shaving ritual, symbolising his transition into leadership and responsibility within the family. He was also presented with a spear and a shield, which represent protection and authority. A special headpiece was placed on him, signifying his official status as family leader and custodian of the Odinga heritage.

In a symbolic gesture of family tradition, cattle were also brought to Kango ka Jaramogi, where the late Raila Odinga was buried. The Odinga family led the cattle, reinforcing their connection to ancestral customs and the late leader’s legacy.

Leaders attend Odinga ceremony

The event drew several political leaders and family friends who came to pay their respects and witness the new generation take centre stage. Among those in attendance were Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, and SK Macharia, Chairman of Royal Media Service.

Macharia, who visited the Odinga family home, emphasised that his support for Raila stems from long-standing family ties.

“I came this morning to see Ida Odinga and offer my support. She has been left by her husband, who was also my brother. Jaramogi told me he had two sons, and since I was older, I should take care of them. They are my brothers. They were left to me,” Macharia said.

The ceremony followed days of visits by political leaders to honour the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Attendees recalled the late leader’s contributions to the country, including mediating political tensions and guiding leadership. Governors Kenneth Lusaka and Ochilo Ayacko also paid their respects during this period, laying wreaths and offering prayers at the family homestead.

The installation of Raila Jr comes at a sensitive period, as family and supporters reflect on the late leader’s legacy.
