Raila Odinga Junior has unveiled the fully restored “Hammer” that became synonymous with his late father Raila Odinga’s 2007 presidential campaign, suggesting the iconic vehicle may remain in public view before being moved to the family museum in Siaya County.

In a post shared on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, Raila Jr showcased the restored Hummer and hinted at a change in plans regarding its final destination.

“A story of Restoration, my initial Idea was to take it to the museum, though I’d like Kenyans to interact with it before I do. #Godbless,” he wrote.

The remarks mark a departure from an earlier position he publicly stated in December 2025, when he announced that the vehicle would be restored and taken to the museum at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, the Odinga family homestead in Bondo.

At the time, Raila Jr said he intended to preserve a significant piece of Kenya’s political history by displaying it alongside other artefacts linked to the family’s legacy.

“My intention is to restore it and take it to the museum at Kango Ka Jaramogi,” he stated on December 8, 2025.

Iconic Hummer gets revival

The Hummer, popularly referred to by supporters as the “Hammer”, became one of the most recognisable symbols of Raila Odinga’s 2007 presidential campaign. Its imposing appearance and frequent use during political rallies made it a fixture in the country’s political landscape.

Following Raila Odinga’s death in October 2025, photographs of the once-famous vehicle parked under a cover sparked public discussion about its condition. Responding to concerns, Raila Jr pledged to restore the vehicle and preserve it as part of his father’s legacy.

Recent images shared by Raila Jr show the Hummer after extensive refurbishment, featuring fresh paintwork, restored fittings and renewed exterior features. The vehicle has also been spotted at public events, including a convoy linked to celebrations after Gor Mahia’s Kenya Premier League triumph at Nyayo National Stadium.

His latest comments suggest that before the vehicle joins the collection at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Kenyans may have an opportunity to see and engage with a piece of political history that many associate with one of the country’s most influential political figures.
