The announcement comes amid a period of unpredictable weather across the country. According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, April is part of the peak of the March–April–May long rains season. Heavy rainfall has already caused floods in multiple counties, destroying homes and infrastructure and displacing thousands of people.
Nairobi, for instance, recorded 37 deaths during recent floods, while the Eastern region reported 26. Floods have also affected the Rift Valley, Nyanza, Central, Coast, and Western regions. In total, over 6,900 households, affecting more than 34,000 people, have been displaced.
Meteorologists warned that heavy rains could continue in some parts of the country, while other regions may see drier conditions. Afternoon and evening storms are expected in many areas.
