National Assembly Minority Whip Robert Mbui has backed the Wiper party to step up its role of government oversight after the recent agreement framework between Raila Odinga and William Ruto.

Speaking during a live interview on Monday, March 10, 2025, Mbui admitted to the enormity of the task following the changes expected in the different departmental committees in the national assembly and the senate.

Mbui, whose party leader in the Wiper Democratic Movement, Kalonzo Musyoka, has criticized the newly signed MoU between Raila and Ruto, says they are keen on retaining their position and continuing to keep the government in check.

“We remain the party not forming a government. We are not in any coalition agreement with anyone in government. We will still oversee them, but if the chair of the committee is from the other side, it means you will be facing difficulty in oversight even from within the committee. We will still do our bit in oversight and tell Kenyans the truth even if the spirit of standing orders has been desecrated by this arrangement,” he said.

The MP further critiqued the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) demeanour in the House, accusing the party of trampling on the standing orders by maintaining one leg in and another leg out of the government.

Concerned

“I’m concerned about how parliament will work henceforth. For all intents and purposes, having signed an MoU agreement means if I am in that party that has signed with the ruling party, then we are part of the same thing. The standing orders are clear: for you to chair an oversight committee, you have to come from a party that is not forming a government. It’s the problem ODM is facing and why they can’t allow this to be called a coalition. They will continue holding on to the position of oversight from PAC and PIC and also continue to be in the executive. Kenyan politics needs to be cleaned up,” he posited.

The remarks follow after Musyoka criticised former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for his dalliance with President William Ruto on Friday, March 7, 2025.
While reacting to the pact, Kalonzo pointed out that Raila would be betraying Kenyans if he fails to advocate for the compensation of Kenyans killed and injured during the Finance Bill protests.

“What has come out of KICC is the biggest betrayal of Kenyans. The People’s Loyal Coalition will never betray Kenyans for temporary comfort,” Kalonzo said.

“If out of what they are signing at KICC, they do not come with a formula on how to address the injustice meted on Kenyans on June 25 and 2023, that will be a betrayal in the city. Handshake or no handshake, Ruto must go.”
