The late popular comedian Zakariah Kariuki, fondly known by his fans as KK Mwenyewe, was laid to rest on July 23, 2025, at his family’s home in Githirioni village, Lari constituency, Kiambu county.

Hundreds of mourners, including fellow comedians, fans, local leaders and relatives, gathered to bid farewell to the 23-year-old online sensation who captured national attention with his humorous mimicry of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The sombre ceremony was marked by emotional tributes from family and colleagues in the comedy industry, many of whom described KK as a humble, hardworking, and naturally gifted entertainer whose light was dimmed too soon.

His father tearfully described his son as not just a child, but a close friend and a source of pride, highlighting his humility, discipline, and determination to succeed despite challenges.

He expressed deep sorrow over the loss, while thanking Kenyans for standing with the family. He concluded by asking for continued prayers for the family, especially KK’s mother and siblings, as they cope with the painful loss.

His mother, Dorcas Waithira Kariuki, was overcome with emotion as she remembered her son’s struggles and rise to fame.

“He worked hard even when life was tough. He gave us laughter, even when he had little,” she said tearfully.

Mourners followed a simple but dignified funeral programme that included prayers, eulogies, performances, and a final viewing of the body before burial.

“We have lost a shining star. KK used laughter to touch lives and inspire many young creatives,” said Kafengo, KK’s best friend and creative partner.

Artistes’ support

The late KK Mwenyewe passed away on Sunday after a short illness, with close friends confirming he had been battling stress-related health issues.

Several leaders, including the area MCA, the Dean of Students at Kisii University and Kiambu youth representatives, called for increased mental health support for young people in the entertainment sector.

“KK’s passing is a wake-up call. Let’s support our youth while they’re still alive, not just after they’re gone,” said one speaker.

Before the burial, the President joined a host of donors who came together for the family when he donated Ksh1 million. The donation was delivered through digital strategist Dennis Itumbi.

Speaking at a meeting where fellow content creators gathered to pay their tributes, Itumbi surprised mourners as he announced a list of high-profile contributions.

“While seated here, I called the Governor of Nakuru, Susan Kihika, and told her I was at this function — she sent Ksh200,000. I will add Ksh100,000. The MP where we will bury our brother, named Mburu Kahangara, will contribute Ksh100,000,” Itumbi said amid claps.

Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah gave Ksh100,000, helping surpass the Ksh1.2 million that was needed to complete the funeral budget.
