As news of the untimely passing of comedian and content creator KK Mwenyewe spread across the country, Kenyans from all walks of life were united in grief.

But no one felt the pain more deeply than his mother, who now faces the unimaginable reality of losing her only son, who will be laid to rest on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

Zachariah Kariuki, popularly known as KK Mwenyewe, died on July 14, 2025, while undergoing treatment at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.

At just 23, his death has left a heavy void not only in Kenya’s digital comedy scene but in the hearts of those closest to him.

“I loved him so much,” his mother Dorcas Waithira Kariuki tearfully told mourners during a condolence visit held at their home on Saturday.  “He was my support emotionally, financially, and spiritually. He was everything to me.”

Her pain is raw, but her words also reflect gratitude for the overwhelming support her family has received.

“It was God’s will… and we thank this team for standing together to help us. Truly, they continue supporting us with the till, and we are grateful,” she said.

KK’s story was one of resilience. Rising from humble beginnings, he gained nationwide recognition through his humorous skits and online presence, particularly his viral impersonations of political figures.

Unknown to many away from the cameras, he was a son deeply committed to his family, often shouldering the weight of responsibilities beyond his years.

“He carried this family on his back,” said a relative. “He was the light in our home, and now that light feels dim.”

His uncle echoed the family’s gratitude and appealed for continued support.

Family gratitude

“We thank Kenyans who have come through for us, and we still welcome help as we plan to give Zachariah a dignified farewell, he had just started building his life, having big dreams,” he said.

The family is now finalising preparations for his burial, buoyed by the love shown by Kenyans online and in person.

A fundraising campaign is ongoing to meet the funeral expenses, with friends and fans contributing through mobile money platforms.

Though gone too soon, KK Mwenyewe’s legacy lives on not only through the laughter he brought to millions but also through the impact he made within his family and community.

“He was my only child and my greatest hope,” Waithira whispered, her voice cracking with emotion.

“Now he’s gone, but I thank everyone who has not left us alone in this sorrow.”
