A Kibera law court has detained Beatrice Wangari for 10 days over the death of Nairobi hospital official Dr Job Obwaka.

Kibera Deputy Registrar (DR) Barbara Alice Akinyi has, on Monday, May 4, 2026, granted the state 10 days instead of the 14 days they were seeking to conclude investigations.

“The State is hereby granted 10 working days; the respondent (Wangari) shall be detained at Kilimani Police Station,” Dr Akinyi ruled.

In seeking detention of Wangari, the prosecution, through Samson Ng’etich, told the court that the matter has gained public interest; thus, realising her will at this stage will put her life in danger.

“That the incident is in the public domain and has attracted emotions; thus, the life of the respondent (Wangari) may be put in danger if released,” the court heard.

Further, they state they informed the court that the postmortem to establish the cause of his death has not been conducted, noting that it is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, 2026; thus, there was a need to detain him until it is complete.

In addition, the prosecution told the court that there were several items recovered from the respondent’s (Wangari’s) house, including wines, plates, a spoon, a water glass, and assorted drugs, among other things, awaiting analysis at the government chemist.

Wangari was arrested on Friday, April 1, 2026, at around 9 pm while at Nairobi Hospital after it emerged that she was the last person with the 79-year-old deceased gynaecologist.

Her arrest came after she took him to the facility on Doctor Wanyoike’s instructions after she informed her that the deceased had developed complications.

Obwaka developed complications while resting at Wangari’s residence in the Milimani area within the Kitengela area after they had shared a meal and proceeded to rest in the master bedroom.

Sensing danger, she sought help from her neighbour, Shadrack Korir, who accompanied her to her house and found the deceased lying on the bed, unresponsive.

Korir then called for a WOBS emergency care ambulance, citing that the deceased had developed complications and was unresponsive.

A paramedic called Toiler Chepkirui Maritim, and a driver, Stanley Nderitu Mwangi, went to Wangari’s residence and found the deceased with a weak pulse rate and low oxygen levels.

Maritim performed CPR on the deceased and administered oxygen and evacuated him to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
