The People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader, Martha Karua, has indicated that the country is ripe for a woman president.

Speaking in Isiolo County on Monday, April 21, 2025, Karua argued that the electorate should entrust a woman with the responsibility of bringing impactful change to the country.

Addressing a handful of her supporters in the northern part of the country, Karua opined that a woman president would tend to issues affecting the nation without neglecting others.

She used the example of how a mother takes care of her kids and the entire homestead to convince the locals to support a woman’s bid to lead the country.

While declaring interest in the top seat, Karua further explained that the unity of the nation would be achieved with a woman at the helm of power.

Mumejaribu wanaume siku izo zote, tafadhali wakati huu jaribuni mama kwa PLP,” she added.

Which loosely translates to: “If God enables me, I will vie for presidency, and as a mother, I will take care of the country as a mother takes care of a homestead. A mother cannot leave any of her children to sleep hungry, even if the food is not enough, she will make sure it is equally distributed to them,” Karua stated.

We want the national cake to be shared equally, not as it is being divided currently. You have tried many male presidents for all those days, kindly now try a female from PLP,” she added.

Karua has been hanging out with opposition leaders led by Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa.

The opposition has been pushing for unity to send the Kenya Kwanza administration home in the 2027 polls.

Female presidency

Since its independence, Kenya has never been led by a female president. Despite several expressing interest to leading the nation, they have never garnered the votes to be declared winners.

With 2027 fast approaching, women leaders have become bold in expressing their interest in battling it out for the country’s top seat.

Besides Karua, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba also expressed interest in the top seat.

Without revealing if she would vie in 2027, Wamuchomba unveiled a vision aimed at transforming the country and changing various sectors of the economy.
