The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has welcomed the High Court judgment convicting former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, Michael Juma Oyamo and Caspal Ojwang Obiero of the murder of Sharon Otieno, describing the verdict as a significant step in the pursuit of justice for victims of gender-based violence.

In a statement issued on Friday, July 24, 2026, and shared on its official X account, KEWOPA said the judgment in Criminal Case No. 46 of 2018 reaffirms the principle that no one is above the law regardless of their social, political or economic status.

The association said the conviction sends a strong message that perpetrators of violence against women can and will be held accountable while reinforcing the country’s commitment to justice.

KEWOPA welcomes judgment

KEWOPA noted that the court’s decision strengthens Kenya’s constitutional obligations under Articles 27, 28, 29, 48 and 50 of the Constitution, which guarantee equality and freedom from discrimination, human dignity, freedom and security of the person, access to justice and the right to a fair hearing.

“This conviction is a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice and reaffirms the fundamental principle that no one is above the law. It sends a strong message that perpetrators of violence against women can and will be held accountable, irrespective of their social, political, or economic status,” the statement read.

The association said the ruling comes at a time when the country continues to grapple with rising cases of gender-based violence and femicide, making accountability in such cases critical.

KEWOPA added that the judgment demonstrates the importance of strengthening institutions responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes against women.

Call for timely justice

While welcoming the conviction, the association observed that Sharon Otieno‘s family had waited nearly eight years for the case to reach this stage.

“Justice delayed places an immense emotional and financial burden on victims’ families and undermines public confidence in the justice system,” the statement said.

KEWOPA said the case highlights the need for timely investigations, expeditious trials and a survivor-centred justice system that delivers justice without unnecessary delays.

It called for greater institutional accountability to ensure reports of violence are handled promptly, investigations conducted professionally and victims treated with dignity throughout the judicial process.

The association said improving the efficiency of the justice system remains essential in addressing violence against women and restoring public confidence in the rule of law.

Commitment to fight GBV

KEWOPA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting legislative and policy reforms aimed at addressing gender-based violence and femicide.

The association said it will continue championing stronger legal protections, institutional accountability and adequate financing for prevention and response services to improve access to justice for survivors and victims’ families.

It also said it was awaiting the court’s sentencing, expressing confidence that the punishment would reflect the seriousness of the offence and reinforce public trust in the administration of justice.

The statement was signed by KEWOPA Chairperson and Kajiado West MP Leah Sankaire, who said the association remains committed to working with Parliament and other stakeholders to strengthen legal and institutional measures aimed at preventing violence against women and ensuring justice for victims.
