The People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has defended her political unity with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In a statement on her official X on Friday, February 28, 2025, Karua addressed the concerns surrounding their partnership, particularly the criticisms that have emerged due to controversial remarks Gachagua made while he was still the deputy president.

She emphasized that their unity is grounded in shared national values adding that their shared goals are not just personal but are driven by the larger aspirations of the Kenyan people, as enshrined in the Constitution.

Karua further highlighted that the movement is inclusive, stressing that moving forward, the expectation is for everyone to unite and work together for the benefit of the people.

“The moral stance that is our values will never change, and our unity of purpose is guided by our collective dreams embodied in the constitution. The movement is open to all and moving forward the expectation is that we pull together on the side of the people,” she affirmed.

While acknowledging that Gachagua‘s past utterances raised eyebrows, Karua reassured the public that her partnership with Gachagua is grounded in principles that aim to unify rather than divide.

“You are right to question disturbing utterances of the recent past but be assured they our unity of purpose is founded on our national values and hopefully, we will positively impact each other and redirect our collective energies to the transformation of our country,” Karua said.

Karua’s and Gachagua’s unity

Karua, speaking during a TV interview on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, explained that despite their past political differences, she and Gachagua decided to set aside their disagreements for the greater good. Their partnership, she added, will bring together other leaders from different parts of the country who believe in the need for change.

“Riggy G is a Kenyan; he is my brother just like Ruto is my brother, but I don’t like how he is running the country, just like Raila is my brother and we have parted politically. At this moment, we are standing in the same place with Riggy G and other leaders, determined to relieve Kenyans of the pain that is on their backs by getting out of the KK regime. There will be a coalition; it may not be today, but it will happen in Kenya. It is now difficult to move forward without working with others,” Karua stated.

On the other hand, Gachagua, on Saturday, January 25, 2025, confirmed that he would be working with the PLP leader going forward after he paid a courtesy call to Karua at her rural home in Kimunye, Kirinyaga County.

“We have had a good conversation, and we have agreed that going forward we are going to work together with other Kenyans. I want to assure you that many Kenyans are looking for leadership. We will work together with like-minded Kenyans, patriots, and people who care for this country. We shall benefit a lot from her counsel; we will consult her regularly alongside other Kenyans of goodwill so that we liberate this country,” Gachagua stated.
