KRA warns Kenyans against fraudsters posing as tax officials
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a fresh public warning against fraudsters posing as tax officials, cautioning Kenyans not to engage with anyone claiming to represent the authority without first verifying their identity.
In a post shared on its official X account on Friday, July 24, 2026, KRA urged taxpayers to confirm the identity of anyone claiming to be its officer before conducting any business.
“Anyone can claim to be from KRA. Verification is what makes the difference. Before engaging with anyone claiming to represent KRA, ask for their National ID number and verify their identity through https://www.kra.go.ke/imposter-detection #ThibitishaKRAStaff,” the Authority said.
The advisory forms part of KRA’s continued efforts to protect taxpayers from fraud and strengthen public confidence in tax administration.
Verify every KRA officer
KRA said members of the public should not assume that anyone presenting themselves as a tax official is genuine. Instead, they should request the officer’s National ID number and verify it using the Authority’s official imposter detection platform before proceeding with any engagement.
The Authority has in recent years stepped up awareness campaigns after receiving reports of individuals masquerading as KRA officers to access businesses, demand money or seek confidential taxpayer information.
According to KRA, genuine officers conducting official duties are expected to identify themselves appropriately and should have no objection to having their credentials verified through the available channels.
The Authority encouraged taxpayers to make verification a routine practice whenever approached by anyone claiming to be acting on its behalf.
Reporting suspicious activity
Besides the online imposter detection portal, KRA said taxpayers can also verify officers through the USSD code *572# and the KRA M-Service mobile application.

Those who remain uncertain after verification or encounter suspicious individuals have been advised to contact KRA immediately through the dedicated telephone line 0726984668.
The Authority has also encouraged the public to report tax-related offences through its anonymous whistleblower platform. The reporting system enables individuals to share information confidentially to support investigations into fraud and other illegal activities affecting tax administration.
KRA noted that public cooperation plays an important role in identifying imposters and protecting taxpayers from financial losses.

Protecting taxpayers from fraud
The Authority reminded Kenyans that official tax processes are conducted through recognised procedures and that taxpayers should never hand over money, personal information or official documents to unverified individuals.
It said verification remains the most effective safeguard against impersonation and urged taxpayers to remain vigilant whenever dealing with persons claiming to represent the Authority.
KRA added that it will continue working to identify and prosecute individuals who impersonate its officers and exploit members of the public.
The latest advisory reinforces the Authority’s message that taxpayers should always verify identities before engaging with anyone claiming to be a KRA official. By using the available verification tools and reporting suspicious activity, members of the public can help protect themselves and support efforts to safeguard the integrity of Kenya’s tax administration.
