Kalonzo: Why Raila cannot join Ruto

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has scoffed at the proposed plan to create the office of the Prime Minister, and hand it to Raila Odinga.
Speaking on the night of Wednesday, February 19, 2025, Kalonzo criticised the proposal wondering what Raila would tell the nation, should he accept the offer.
According to Kalonzo, those insisting on the position, have no idea of Raila’s principals.
He also noted that the position is unconstitutional and that accepting the offer would only hurt Odinga’s political stand.
“Are they saying Raila Odinga to become Prime Minister? Then they don’t know him. According to him, and according to us in the ticket with Martha Karua they won the elections, and now you want him to become Prime Minister? What will he be saying to the country?” Kalonzo said.

Continuing his explanation on why Raila cannot join Ruto, Kalonzo affirmed that accepting the position will also make him lose the privilege of serving as the principal of consultation with President William Ruto as dictated under the National Dialogue Committee (Nadco).
“The only thing I hope is Raila does not join Ruto. If he does, he will lose the position of the principal. We had built within Nadco the principal of consultation between Raila and Ruto, this is one reason Raila cannot join Ruto,” he added.
“If he joins him, then I become the other principal. I am willing to become the principal to save the country.”

Kalonzo’s remarks come after Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei advocated for the formation of the Office of the Prime Minister and have Raila serving in the position as indicated in the Nadco report.
The vocal senator justified that handing the position to Raila is the best way to appreciate and reward him for his fight for the rule of law and democracy in the country.
“We must now fully implement the NADCO Report by amending the Constitution 2010 to create the office of the Prime Minister (PM) and allow Baba Raila Odinga to serve Kenyans in that capacity. We cannot allow such brilliant leadership and experience to go to waste the way the Africa Union did it.
“This is the only way we can appreciate and reward him for his fight for the rule of law and democracy in Kenya,” he said.
