Kalonzo hails Democratic Party’s role in Kenya’s multiparty democracy
Wiper Patriotic Front Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has praised the Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) for its historical role in advancing multiparty democracy and constitutional reforms in Kenya.
Speaking at the party’s National Delegates Conference at Ufungamano House in Nairobi on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Kalonzo highlighted the DP’s foundational role in Kenya’s second liberation and its enduring contribution to the country’s democratic journey.

“I was honoured to be part of the Democratic Party of Kenya National Delegates Conference at Ufungamano House, alongside fellow United Opposition leaders, including Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua, Hon. Eugene Wamalwa, Fred Matiang’i, senators, MPs and many others committed to the future of our country,” Kalonzo wrote.
He reflected on the party’s origins in 1991, during the struggle to repeal Section 2A of the Constitution, which had entrenched single-party rule. Kalonzo also paid tribute to the party’s founders and Kenya’s third President, Mwai Kibaki, whom he served as Vice President.
“Founded in 1991 during the critical struggle to repeal Section 2A of the Constitution, which had entrenched single-party rule, the Democratic Party of Kenya emerged as one of the pioneering forces in Kenya’s Second Liberation. The party’s founders, including our Third President of the Republic of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki, whom I had the privilege to serve as his and your tenth Vice President, stood firm when demanding and ensuring that Kenya would be a multiparty democracy,” he added.

Kalonzo also noted that the venue, Ufungamano House, carries historical significance for constitutional reform, including the Ufungamano Initiative and the IPPG reforms. He said the conference was an opportunity to draw inspiration from the DP’s legacy while reaffirming commitment to accountable governance.
“Today, as we gathered at Ufungamano House, a venue itself steeped in the history of constitutional reform and the Ufungamano Initiative that contributed to the IPPG reforms, we all united, drew inspiration from the DP’s enduring legacy. From the fight for constitutional change in the 1990s, through the promulgation of our transformative 2010 Constitution, to today’s ongoing struggle for accountable governance and the rule of law, this party has remained steadfast,” Kalonzo said.

He concluded by emphasising the need to protect democratic freedoms, uphold devolution, and recommit to constitutionalism.
“It was a privilege to attend this important conference under the leadership of Hon. JB Muturi, Party Leader of the Democratic Party of Kenya, and to recommit ourselves to the principles of constitutionalism, devolution, and the protection of democratic freedoms that generations of Kenyans have fought to secure,” Kalonzo concluded.
