Victor Wanyama’s much-anticipated return to the Harambee Stars has been postponed.

The team confirmed on Friday, May 30, 2025, that the veteran midfielder, initially named in the provisional squad for the upcoming friendlies against Chad, has been excused due to personal commitments in the United Kingdom.

Wanyama, currently turning out for Dunfermline Athletic in Scotland, was expected to make his first national team appearance since retiring from international football in 2021.

His return had reignited hope among fans eager to see the ex-Tottenham Hotspur man anchor Kenya’s midfield once again.

New spark in midfield

In response to Wanyama’s absence, head coach Benni McCarthy has called up Gor Mahia’s dynamic midfielder Austine Odhiambo.

The playmaker, who has been in stellar form in domestic football, now has a fresh opportunity to cement his growing role in the national setup.

“Victor Wanyama, initially named in the provisional squad for the upcoming friendlies verse Chad, has been excused due to personal commitments in the UK.

In his place, Gor Mahia’s midfielder Austine Odhiambo gets the call-up!” Harambee Stars said on Friday, May 30, 2025.

Odhiambo’s rising star

The 2023/2024 season’s Kenyan Premier League Most Valuable Player (MVP), Odhiambo has quickly become one of the most influential midfielders in the country.

He earned his senior debut in June 2024 and already has two international caps to his name.

Odhiambo made his debut during Kenya’s 1-1 draw against Burundi in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

His immediate impact was felt as he provided a clever assist for Duke Abuya’s goal, showcasing his vision and calmness under pressure.

He further impressed during the COSAFA Cup in South Africa, where he scored twice and registered an assist, helping Harambee Stars reach the quarter-finals.

His performances led to a starting role in Kenya’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Zimbabwe, where he played the full 90 minutes on the left wing in a tightly contested 0-0 draw.

Reflecting on his rapid rise, Odhiambo shared his sentiments during an appearance on the Tiki Taka show:

“It is a privilege for any player to be called up for the national team. There are many players who dream of playing for the side, but only a few get selected. It is always a dream come true and a privilege.”

Morocco friendlies await

Harambee Stars are scheduled to face Chad on June 7 and June 10, 2025, in Morocco as part of their preparations for the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The team reports to camp on Sunday, June 2,2025.

With Odhiambo stepping in, all eyes will be on the 22-year-old midfielder to carry his club form onto the international stage.

While Wanyama’s absence is notable, Kenya’s fans may find excitement in witnessing the evolution of the team’s future engine room.
