Sifuna hails Blak Blad’s redemption run at Prinsloo 7s
After enduring the sting of relegation from Division One during the opening leg of the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) National Sevens Circuit, Driftwood Sevens, Kenyatta University’s Black Blad made a powerful statement at the Prinsloo Sevens in Nakuru at the Prinsloo 7s on the weekend of Saturday, August 2 to Sunday, August 3, 2025 at the Nakuru Athletics Club.
Prinsloo 7s successful journey
Blak Blad stormed through the Division 2B competition, capping off a flawless weekend performance with a narrow but decisive 10-5 win over Kabarak University in the final to clinch the championship.
The triumph marks their immediate return to Division One, setting the stage for a much-anticipated appearance at the Christie Sevens on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.
“We came to Nakuru with one mission, to rise again,” Blak Blad ace Douglas Sifuna told People Sport on Monday, August 4, 2025, in a heartfelt reflection. “And rise we did.”
On Day 1, Blak Blad eased past MKU Nairobi 19-0, edged NYS Spades 19-12, and blanked Molo 24-0 to top their pool. The knockout stages showcased even greater brilliance, with the team thumping P361 32-0 in the quarterfinals, outclassing Kisii University 34-0 in the semis, and grinding out a gritty 10-5 win in the final against Kabarak University.
Sifuna reserved special praise for teammate Elvis Otete, who walked away with the Most Valuable Player and Top Scorer accolades.
“Proud beyond words of my teammate Elvis Otete – a true game-changer,” Sifuna said. “To my fellow Blak Blad brothers, this victory is yours. Every tackle, every try, every sprint mattered.”
Their stellar run at Prinsloo Sevens has arguably earned Blak Blad silverware and restored their rightful place in Division One. With eyes now firmly set on the Christie Sevens, Sifuna and his teammates are determined to carry the momentum forward.
Bkak Blad are placed in a tough pool in the second leg of the national sevens circuit series. The side will face former champions KCB Rugby in Pool D alongside Mwamba RFC and Nondescripts. With every team in this group boasting a strong rugby tradition, fans can expect closely contested fixtures.
Looking ahead, each team will be seeking to make a statement in Pool D of the Christie Sevens. KCB won the Drifwood 7s in Mombasa but got humiliated by Strathmore Leos in Nakuru over the weekend. The Bankers will be seeking to bounce back strong.
