TSC calls for urgent security review after Garissa terror attack
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has called for an urgent assessment of security for teachers working in Northern Kenya following the killing of a teacher in Garissa.
In a statement on Monday, January 26, 2026, the Commission revealed plans to visit Hulugho Sub-County on January 27, 2026, alongside other relevant government agencies to assess the region’s security situation.
“The Commission, together with other relevant government agencies, will visit Hulugho Sub-County in Garissa to assess the situation on the ground and ascertain the safety of its employees in the area,” TSC wrote on X.
According to the Commission, the deceased was brutally shot dead in an attack suspected to have been carried out by Al-Shabaab militants while he was on duty.

Following the incident, the government, working closely with security agencies, flew the body to Nairobi, where it is currently preserved at Chiromo Funeral Home as funeral arrangements continue.
At the same time, TSC said it is working closely with the bereaved family to provide support and ensure the late teacher receives a dignified send-off, while strongly condemning the attack as a heinous and cowardly act that threatened the right to education.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of teachers and learners, pledging continued collaboration with government agencies to enhance security in affected areas.
“We wish to inform the public that the Commission takes the safety and security of teachers seriously and will offer all the necessary support to improve the welfare of its employees,” TSC said.
“On behalf of the Commission and the entire teaching fraternity, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mr Stephen Vundi Musili, his relatives, colleagues, and learners during this moment of profound grief.”

Police on the attack
Meanwhile, police reports indicate that the suspected Al Shabaab militants struck multiple targets yesterday at dawn, first storming the chief’s residence, where they shot him at close range before detonating an explosive device on his vehicle parked outside.
The said terrorists later targeted Musili’s home, forced him outside and killed him a short distance away before fleeing the scene.
While confirming that the area has been secured, the officers added that an operation is ongoing to apprehend those responsible and ensure they face the full force of the law.
“A multi-agency security team is actively pursuing the perpetrators of this cowardly act. The area has been secured, and an operation is ongoing to apprehend those responsible and ensure they face the full force of the law,” the statement read in part.
