A chief and a primary school teacher are reported to have been killed in a suspected Al-Shabaab attack on Sunday, January 25, 2026, night in Garissa.

Confirming the incident on Monday, January 26, 2026, Garissa Member of Parliament (MP) Edo Udgoon Siyad described the death of the two as a profound loss not only to their families but also to the entire Garissa community.

“I send my condolences to the families of Chief Abdi Gani Owl and the dedicated teacher, both of whom served the Hulugho community with unwavering commitment,” Siyad wrote on Facebook.

“We condemn this senseless violence and stand united in support of all affected. May Chief Gani rest in Jannatul Firdaus, and may the teacher’s family find strength and peace.”

The duo are said to have been ambushed and killed by the militants in their homes in Hulugho town on Sunday.

The incident comes months after two police officers were killed after a vehicle they were travelling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device along the Liboi-Kulan road in Garissa County.

The area is near the porous Kenya-Somalia border, which most of the time is breached by terrorists.

Police said the Border Patrol Unit vehicle was attacked by the Somali-based militant group al-Shabaab.

They had planted an IED on the road before setting it off as the vehicle approached the area.

The Land Cruiser was patrolling on the road when it was hit, police said.

It was badly damaged and killed one officer on the spot.

“Another succumbed to the injuries later. Five other officers were injured in the attack.”A group of terrorists attempted to infiltrate our border. Our Special teams manning our border taught them a lesson. Our superior firepower and committed officers will always win against the enemies of our nation,” the Anti-Terrorism Unit revealed.

“One officer died on the spot, another later succumbed to injuries, while five others were wounded. Authorities say the attack comes after months of relative calm following intensified security operations, which have since been further scaled up to address the terror threat in the region.”

Moreover, Garissa residents had staged protests over surging murder cases that have plagued the town for a long time, even as the government vows to act swiftly to end the menace.
