Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, Matungu MP Peter Oscar Nabulindo and former Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa have been summoned by the police over the fracas that broke out at a funeral in Matungu constituency on Saturday.

The police summoned the politicians as the family of the late chief returned all the contributions, including the bulls, made towards the burial ceremony.

The Western Regional Police Commander Kiprono Lang’at said Barasa, Nabulindo and the former CS Echesa were expected to record statements over accusations that they ignited the chaos.

Over 100 mourners, including police officers, were badly injured during running battles at the funeral of retired Chief Augustine Gerald Odongo

No, thanks

“There is an emerging trend where goons are ferried to funerals and other public functions to heckle targeted people and cause chaos. What happened in Matungu, for instance, is regrettable and cannot be wished away,” he told the press at his office.

The police boss pointed out that they had served the trio with the summons and that he expected them to appear before the Directorate of Criminal Investigations regional offices in Kakamega town for interrogations by this morning.

The family of the late Mzee Agostino Odongo returned the money and a bull that had been donated by Nabulindo and Echesa in protest over the chaos.

The agitated family members delivered the bull back to Nabulindo’s home in the constituency and sent the money via MPesa.
“We have handed back the bull to the MP plus the Sh15,000 that he had contributed,” said family members.

In a statement signed by the family of the late Odongo, they blamed Echesa and Nabulindo for the mayhem.
