Omollo gives update on renovation of Raila Odinga Stadium ahead of Madaraka Day fete

Principal Secretary for State Department for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo has given a status report on the renovation works at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County.
According to the PS, the works at the stadium are nearing completion, and it is expected to be handed over by the contractor in mid-May, 2025. The stadium will host this year’s Madaraka Day celebration.
“The transformation of Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay is nearing completion, with the construction of spectator terraces and the installation of a full-circle canopy now in the final stages.
“The upgraded facility is scheduled for handover by 15th May, positioning it as the official venue for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations on 1st June. Beyond serving as a venue for national events, the stadium holds immense significance for the local community,” Omollo stated in a post on his X account on Friday, May 2, 2025.
He highlighted the benefits the local community will get when the stadium is finally operational.
“It will nurture sporting talent by providing a world-class arena for training and competition.
“Moreover, its capacity to host both local and international games positions Homa Bay as a growing hub for sports tourism.
“Hosting national celebrations and other large-scale events will also be a major economic boost to the region, generating revenue for local businesses,” he concluded.
Kenya is in the race to upgrade its stadiums to meet international standards, mainly because it will co-host CAF tournaments in 2025 and in 2027.
The African Nations Championship (CHAN) will be played in August in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The African Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals will be co-hosted by the three East African countries in 2027.
