Nairobi regional commissioner: We have managed to neutralise goons in the city
Nairobi Regional Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo has stated that the goons who were previously predominant in the city have already been neutralised.
While speaking during an interview with a local radio station on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, the Nairobi commissioner assured the country that the goons who had been rocking the city in the past months, especially around the Gen Z commemoration protests, have all been cracked down on, with some arrested.
He went on to state that most of these criminal gangs emerged as goons hired by politicians to advance their politics, but after being used, they were left with nothing to do and ended up on the streets mugging people, terrorising the city, and stealing.

“The security situation in Nairobi has really improved. There are no longer challenges as we had a few months back, especially during the Gen Z demonstration. They are a group of goons who were being used by politicians. They took that advantage to start terrorising people, but nowadays we have taken care of it; we have already neutralised them.”
He further stated that after stringent measures were taken against them, they have been neutralised and are no longer on the streets of the city after weeks of instilling fear among Nairobi residents. He added that insecurity cases in Nairobi have now scaled down and are no longer as prevalent as they were before.

Kitiyo also took issue with politicians hiring goons and baptising them as their followers.
“There is a lot that happens in the background. It is not a field day for them. For example, they baptise their followers and call them their supporters, but occasionally they misuse them.”

This comes months after insecurity in Nairobi City had escalated, with many city dwellers fearing for their lives, prompting top leaders in Nairobi and the security sector to take action.
Sakaja is addressing the issue
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja was forced to convene a meeting, where several issues meant to curb insecurity in the capital were agreed upon.
After the meeting, Sakaja stated that the county government has teamed up with KPLC to address street lighting issues caused by vandalism by criminal gangs. He noted that many lights had been vandalised, creating dark spots that criminals used to carry out their activities effectively.

The governor urged the police leadership to increase the physical presence of officers in the city during this critical period to reassure residents and deter criminals.
Gilbert Kitiyo, who was part of the meeting, stated that police coverage across the Nairobi region has also been increased, including sufficient deployment for night patrols.
