Lawmakers want impeached former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua arrested over his remarks that Kenya could plunge into potential violence after the 2027 General Election.

The MPs who suspended House business on May 27, 2025, to discuss Gachagua said he ought to be in jail as his remarks are not only derogatory but could lead the country into violence.

They called out the National Police Service (NPS), the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) for failing to arrest Gachagua for his remarks.

The MPs’ remarks came after Speaker Moses Wetang’ula approved an adjournment motion tabled by Leader of Minority Junet Mohammed seeking to discuss Gachagua’s conduct.

“I will direct that this matter be disposed of in the shortest time possible, and I will allocate one and a half hours to the motion starting at 4 pm this afternoon. In the event, we get to 4 pm and we are still having business-like statements, they will be stepped down, you go to the motion, and then thereafter, we can proceed with what is left of the other businesses,” Wetang’ula said.

Junet, while moving the motion, said Gachagua had “lost his head, his soul and now wants to take the country to the precipice so that people can fight.”

Leader of Majority Kimani Ichung’wa said Gachagua ought to be in jail for making remarks that could plunge the country into violence.

Ichung’wa said that Gachagua does not deserve to hold any position of leadership if his remarks were to be taken seriously.

“I dare add today, this is not just a man with a dark heart but a very dark soul. And a dark soul to the extent that this man believes that the death of Kenyans, the bloodshed that this country witnessed in 2007, as unfortunate as it was, he can equate the death and bloodshed that was occasioned on innocent Kenyans as a Christmas Party. This tells you that this is indeed a man with a very dark soul,” Ichung’wah stated.

“I said over the weekend that when you harbour such dark thoughts, you do not deserve to be a leader anywhere. This is somebody who now pontificates as if he’s God. You heard him over the weekend telling artists who sought his help when he was holding a high government office to sort out their copyright issues, but he had no time for them. But now he wants to commandeer who they will sing to, what songs they will sing, when they will sing and how they will sing,” he added.

Majority whip and South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro, who termed Gachagua as having a mental problem, demanded that he be arrested for his remarks.

He called out the NCIC, NPS and IG for failing to arrest him despite him making such derogatory remarks.
