The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a partial closure of the Thika Superhighway (A2 Road) at Globe Roundabout in Nairobi to facilitate reinstatement works on the Nairobi River bridge.

In a public notice issued on Thursday, March 12, 2026, KeNHA said the disruption will remain in effect until Thursday, March 19, 2026.

The authority indicated that the temporary closure will allow engineers to carry out technical works required to restore the bridge structure.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) would like to inform the public that Thika Superhighway shall be partially closed at the Globe Roundabout to enable the reinstatement works at the Nairobi River bridge as from Thursday, March 12, 2026, to Thursday, March 19, 2026.”

The Globe Roundabout is a key junction linking the Thika Superhighway to several major routes, including the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD), University Way, Kipande Road and surrounding areas. The section carries heavy traffic daily, serving commuters traveling between Nairobi and satellite towns along the Thika corridor.

The advisory, by KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli, notes that the closure will affect the bridge section specifically, with temporary traffic adjustments put in place during the construction period.

Diversions outlined for motorists

KeNHA has provided alternative routes to help manage traffic flow during the works. Motorists heading to the Nairobi CBD from Thika Road will be diverted through the Globe Overpass to maintain access to the city centre.

Vehicles traveling toward University Way from Thika Road will be redirected through Prof. Wangari Maathai Road.

Drivers using Kipande Road and heading toward the CBD or OTC have been advised to connect through Limuru Road near Fig Tree before proceeding to Prof. Wangari Maathai Road.

In addition, motorists approaching from University Way or the CBD who wish to make a U-turn at Globe Roundabout toward Guru Nanak have been directed to use the designated U-turn point at Guru Nanak.

“Nairobi CBD-bound traffic from Thika will use the Globe Overpass • University Way traffic from Thika will use Prof. Wangari Maathai Road • Traffic from Kipande Road to CBD and OTC to use Limuru Road (Fig Tree) then Prof. Wangari Maathai Road • Traffic from University Way / CBD intending to make a U-turn at Globe Roundabout to head to Guru Nanak U-turn.”

Motorists urged to observe safety measures

KeNHA has advised road users to exercise caution while approaching the work zone and to follow traffic signs and instructions issued by authorities on site.

Motorists are also encouraged to plan their journeys and allow additional travel time due to possible congestion along the diversion routes.

The authority noted that traffic management measures may change depending on the progress of the works and site conditions.

KeNHA said members of the public may seek further information through its customer care channels, including the toll-free line 0800 811 244 and the authority’s official communication platforms.
