KeNHA announces more demolitions along Thika Superhighway
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a seven-day notice to roadside traders operating along sections of the Thika Superhighway to remove their structures and wares from the road reserve.
In a public notice dated Monday, February 23, 2026, the authority directed traders operating at Kihunguro (both bounds), Allsops (both bounds), and the Delview sections to clear the affected areas within seven days from the date of the notice.
KeNHA said the clearance is aimed at paving the way for the construction of designated roadside stations intended to enhance corridor functionality, improve safety standards, and ease traffic congestion along the busy highway.
“The project is part of the Authority’s ongoing road safety improvement initiatives that seek to reduce accidents, enhance order within the road reserve, and ensure the unobstructed flow of traffic along the highway,” the notice read in part.
The agency urged all affected traders to comply within the stipulated timeframe to avoid enforcement action in accordance with laws governing road reserves.
This comes days after KeNHA demolished roadside businesses in the busy Githurai area, where hundreds of traders had put up makeshift stalls on the road reserve.
n February 20, 2026, KeNHA announced that it had initiated the clearance of all illegal structures along the Thika Superhighway.
“The Authority started at Githurai where clearance is meant to pave the way for the construction of a modern bus park,” KeNHA stated.
“The structures had encroached onto the road reserve, posing significant safety risks to thousands of motorists and pedestrians within the busy market area. Over time, this section has recorded numerous road safety incidents — a trend the Authority is firmly committed to reverse.”
According to KeNHA, the planned facility will provide a designated space for buses and matatus to safely pick up and drop off passengers, thereby enhancing order, efficiency, and traffic flow along the corridor.
“Additionally, improved access from Githurai Roundabout to the highway will strengthen connectivity, offering greater convenience to road users and substantially easing congestion along this high-traffic section,” KeNHA stated.
KeNHA has announced that it will also undertake a similar clearance at Roysambu Roundabout to pave the way for the development of another modern bus park.
