Activist Mulinge Muteti has said discussions are underway among activists and other groups to deliver a petition to Parliament, with August 8, 2026 under consideration following the July 7 Saba Saba protests.

In a statement shared on X, Muteti said the petition was not presented to Parliament during the Saba Saba demonstrations and that consultations are ongoing to agree on a new date.

“Back on 5 July 2026, while appearing on a local TV station, I declared 7 July 2026 a public holiday and called on all Kenyans to use the day to demand justice for victims of extrajudicial killings, police brutality, and enforced disappearances.”

He said Kenyans responded to the call despite challenges encountered during the demonstrations.

“True to my declaration, the day became a public holiday in practice, and Kenyans showed William Kipchirchir Ruto where power truly resides. Though for some of us, including myself, it came at a cost (abduction, torture, and a court case), despite the threats and intimidation from Ruto’s regime, Kenyans did their best to demand an end to extrajudicial killings.”

Petition to Parliament

Muteti said the petition intended for Parliament remains a priority and discussions are ongoing on when it will be delivered. “Now, because William Ruto did not allow us to deliver our petition to Parliament, we have decided that the petition must reach Parliament.”

He said revolutionaries, patriots and progressive groups are consulting before announcing the final date.

“All revolutionaries, patriots, and other progressive forces are currently in discussions to agree on a date when the petition will be delivered to Parliament.” “8 August 2026 is under consideration, but once a final decision has been made, we will make an announcement.”

He concluded the statement by urging supporters to prepare for the next phase.

Saba Saba demonstrations

Muteti had called on Kenyans on July 5 to observe July 7 as a day of civic action and participate in a peaceful march to Parliament.

The planned petition sought action on issues including extrajudicial killings, police brutality, enforced disappearances, abductions and torture.

The July 7 demonstrations saw heightened security operations in Nairobi and other parts of the country, with roads leading to key government installations closed and police deployed in several locations.

Muteti said he was arrested during the events and later taken to court. The activist said the petition was intended to be presented to Parliament but was not delivered during the demonstrations.

Muteti said the planned petition remains on course and that organisers will communicate the agreed date after consultations are completed.

The proposed petition seeks the establishment of a Joint Parliamentary Select Committee to examine concerns raised over extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, torture, abductions and the use of force during public demonstrations.

The renewed plans come a month after the Saba Saba protests, with organisers saying they remain committed to presenting the petition to Parliament once a final date is agreed.
