People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has called on President Ruto to end dictatorial leadership and embrace the rule of law. Karua has called on the president to also cease using the police to intimidate the United Opposition members.

Speaking during a public rally in Nairobi CBD on Friday, January 30, 2026, Karua has reiterated that the united opposition wants the police to stop using the police warning for a mass action if the government will not desist from using the police to intimidate them. Karua has said that the police are being used as goons to disrupt united oppositions activity.

“We will not be silent while the National Police Service is weaponised against the very people it is meant to protect. Kenya belongs to its people, not to those who temporarily hold authority. The culture of impunity and goonism has no place in a civilised society,” Karua said.

Karua has further stated that the United Opposition will remain united, calling on the members of the public to support the united opposition to remove Ruto from office.

Visiting Kanja’s office

The united opposition delegation had visited the office of the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to submit over twenty-three violent incidents targeting opposition leaders and their supporters. These attacks have disrupted funerals, prayer gatherings, church services, political convoys, party events, and the recently concluded by-elections.

In each instance, goons, often accompanied by heavy police escorts, have deployed teargas, fired live ammunition, torched vehicles, ambushed motorcades, and desecrated sacred spaces. Despite numerous reports, no meaningful investigations have been conducted, and no arrests have been made.

Members of the United Opposition have given the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, an ultimatum of two weeks to arrest security officers believed to be behind the Othaya church attack incident. The opposition has indicated that should their demand not be met by the IG by February 16, 2026, then they will be forced to call for mass action
