Members of the United Opposition have given the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, an ultimatum of two weeks to arrest security officers believed to be behind the Othaya church attack incident.

The opposition has indicated that should their demand not be met by the IG by February 16, 2026, then they will be forced to call for mass action.

Speaking in a media briefing after a session with the IG in Nairobi on Friday, January 30, 2026, the opposition said that the incident that happened in on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at a church in Othaya was not a usual incident.

They have termed it an assassination attempt against the former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, and therefore, it should be investigated with urgency.

“We were very clear with them that the seniority of these leaders should scare them. Given that this matter is not a normal engagement, we have given them until the 16th if they have not arrested the police officers with AK47 who were mobilised by two police vehicles all the way from Nairobi. We shall call be back here, and we shall call for mass action if that is not done,” Kalonzo said.

International community intervention

Led by the Wiper Patriotic Movement Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, the leaders have called on the international community, including the United Nations, to alert them that the national police service is compromised and is being used to harass the opposition.

The leaders have called on the national security council to ensure that security is provided in accordance with the constitution, as this is the key mandate of the police unit.

The United Opposition has said the mass action will be to compel the expulsion from office of the Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Kipchumba Murkomen, and the Inspector General of Police, as well as the two deputy inspectors general of police.

“I have looked at the IG of police straight in the eye, and told him that the attack at Witima Church was an assassination attempt… a special squad of police officers called Nairobi Sierra of 12 officers was dispatched to eliminate us. We have told the IG that the squad must be arrested and disarmed. If this situation continues after February 16, tutaitisha maandamano to remove the Interior CS, Police IG and the 2 DIGs from office,” Gachagua said.
