Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has chaired a meeting with top members of the Azimio leadership at his Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka Command Centre in Karen.

Photos shared on social media show the Wiper leader, who also serves as the Azimio La Umoja coalition leader, on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, together with Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, who was recently appointed Secretary-General of the coalition by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta; former Gatanga MP David Murathe; and Azimio La Umoja Executive Director Philip Kisia.

Kalonzo has not disclosed what transpired during the high-level meeting.

The meeting comes just days after the coalition was revamped by its chairman, Uhuru Kenyatta, through sweeping leadership changes that saw several officials replaced by leaders who remain in the opposition and have not joined the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The changes saw Suna East MP Junet Mohamed lose his position as secretary-general, while cooperative cabinet secretary Wycliffe Oparanya and mining cabinet secretary Hassan Joho were also removed from the Azimio La Umoja National Executive Council following the restructuring.

The revamp has sparked speculation that Azimio could serve as the political vehicle the United Opposition will use in its bid to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Kalonzo himself hinted at the possibility during a media interview, revealing that there were plans to revamp the coalition and possibly rebrand it under a new name, such as Komboa Kenya, for use by the United Opposition. He argued that with limited time remaining before the next general election, it would be more practical to restructure the existing coalition rather than form an entirely new political outfit.

However, People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua dismissed the proposal, insisting that Azimio is politically dead and cannot be resurrected.

Sioni PLP ikienda Azimio, na kama kuna watu wataenda Azimio, watatuambia kwa nini turudi kwa meli iliyo zama na tueunda meli mpya,” she said.

Azimio to field presidential candidate

On his part, Caroli Omondi maintained that Azimio La Umoja will be the coalition that fronts the opposition’s presidential candidate in 2027. He said the coalition’s presidential ticket will represent a compromise between the older and younger generations of leaders.

Omondi further stated that the Azimio presidential flag bearer in 2027 will come from the community that has consistently supported Raila Odinga’s presidential bids but has never produced a president. According to him, the time has come for Raila’s community to receive support from other regions in the country.

“His Excellency, the retired President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, is actually the chairman of the Azimio Council,” Omondi noted. “Kalonzo Musyoka, His Excellency, is the party leader.”

He also expressed confidence that the revamped coalition can consolidate more than 16 million votes in the 2027 general election.
