Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced a week-long national tribute to honour the late Raila Odinga, highlighting the enduring legacy of the former Prime Minister.

During a visit to Raila’s family at Opoda Farm on Thursday, November 6, 2025, Musyoka said, “Mtu mwenye haki ya kumuenzi na kujaribu jinsi tuwezavyo to make sure the name Raila Odinga lives on, it is one Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka.”

The statement underscores his commitment to perpetuating Raila’s memory across Kenya.

Plans for nationwide celebration

Musyoka outlined a comprehensive plan for remembrance, stating, “Nimemuuliza mama Ida, hatujamaliza kumuenzi Raila Odinga. With Mama Ida’s permission, we are going to have a week-long event in Nairobi to celebrate Raila at an appropriate time, and we will do that in every county.”

He emphasised that the initiative aims to recognise Raila’s contributions, particularly his role as a champion of devolution, highlighting the nationwide scope of the tribute.

Symbolic succession ceremony

The visit also marked a symbolic succession ceremony for Raila Junior, the late leader’s eldest son. Musyoka handed him “instruments of power” to signify his readiness to continue his father’s legacy.

“Kalonzo Musyoka invited Raila Junior to come forward so he could hand him what he referred to as ‘instruments of power’, symbolically meaning that as the eldest son, he is expected to take over from where his father left off,” a source reported.

Musyoka explained that the gesture was meant to strengthen ties between the Kamba region and Nyanza, Raila’s stronghold. “Kalonzo added that the gesture was meant to act as a link between the Kamba region, which had heavily supported Raila, and the Nyanza region, which was his stronghold.”

The instruments, including a bow and arrows, a small stool, a shield, and a fly whisk, carry deep symbolic weight.

“According to Kalonzo, the instruments of power were to be used by Raila Junior to guard the entire community, extending from his father’s, his grandfather Jaramogi Oginga’s, the entire Luo nation, and Kenya at large,” he declared, adding, “Hii utatumia kulinda jamii ya Raila, ya Jaramogi, ya Wajaluo na wa Kenya kwa ujumla.”

Musyoka expressed confidence in Raila Junior’s ability to uphold the legacy.

“Kalonzo went on to express his confidence in Raila Junior, saying that he believes Junior is up to the task of taking over from where his father left off.”

The ceremony followed Raila Junior’s recent crowning as family head, overseen by Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, and was clarified as a familial, not political, transition.
