Kalonzo dismisses Wantam Movement platform after invitation notice for presidential debate
Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has distanced his party, the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition, from a newly launched digital platform claiming to give Kenyans a say in selecting the Opposition’s 2027 presidential flagbearer.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 16, 2026, Kalonzo said the platform, unveiled by a lobby group identifying itself as the WANTAM Advisory Committee, had not been sanctioned by any of the three political formations.
“Our attention has been drawn to a digital platform recently unveiled by a lobby group referring to itself as the WANTAM Advisory Committee, purportedly designed to give Kenyans a voice in shaping the Opposition’s 2027 presidential flagbearer selection,” the statement read.

“We state clearly: Both the initiative as well as the lobby group have not been sanctioned by the Wiper Patriotic Front, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, or the United Alternative Government in Waiting.”
Growing interest among Kenyans
Despite distancing the coalition from the initiative, Kalonzo welcomed the growing interest among Kenyans, particularly young people, in shaping the country’s political future ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He said citizen participation is a constitutional principle that should guide all democratic processes, noting that any platform seeking to engage Kenyans must uphold fairness, transparency and inclusivity.

“Any initiative that seeks to deepen citizen participation is welcome. We urge that it be conducted with the fairness, transparency and inclusivity its stated vision promises,” he said.
Announcing presidential flagbearer
Kalonzo further stated that if the platform conducts opinion polling, it should ensure that its methodology, sampling and weighting comply with internationally recognised standards, with the findings published transparently.

The former Vice President also assured supporters that the Opposition coalition would announce its official process for selecting its 2027 presidential flagbearer through recognised and legitimate channels.
“The Wiper Patriotic Front, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, and the United Alternative Government in Waiting will communicate the official process for flagbearer selection through proper and recognized channels in due course,” the statement added.
The clarification comes amid growing public debate over how Kenya’s opposition will settle on a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
