Jubilee Party has joined the world in commemorating World Press Freedom Day, issuing a message recognising journalists and media professionals for their role in sustaining democracy and the free flow of information in Kenya and globally.

In a statement shared on X by Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang’i on Sunday, May 3, 2026, Jubilee said:

“As we mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day, we honour and appreciate the courageous journalists and media professionals in Kenya and across the world whose work sustains the free flow of information, the backbone of open and democratic societies.”

The party also reflected on the risks faced by media practitioners in the line of duty. “Today, we also reflect on the immense sacrifices many in the media have made in pursuit of truth. We must stand firm in protecting press freedom, safeguarding their safety, and defending every Kenyan’s right to be informed.”

Jubilee concluded its message with a call highlighting the importance of a free press.

Opposition leaders highlight media role

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka also marked the day, commending journalists for their resilience and commitment to reporting during politically sensitive periods, including the 2024 Gen Z protests.

“On this World Press Freedom Day, we celebrate and honour the men and women of the media who stand firm in defence of truth and the voice of the people,” Kalonzo said.

He added that journalists remained active despite government directives during the protests.

“Even when the government ordered the closure of stations simply for informing the public, you remained steadfast.”

Kalonzo further cited constitutional provisions, referencing Article 34 on media freedom and Article 33 on freedom of expression, calling for continued protection of press rights.

Gachagua on press freedom and democracy

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also issued remarks praising the media’s contribution to democratic governance and urging responsible journalism ahead of the 2027 general election.

“Press freedom has come a long way. You fought to earn it. Do not let your guard down, especially now that Kenyans are yearning for change. Listen to Kenyans and tell their stories,” Gachagua said.

He added: “A free press is not only a pointer to democracy, but it is democracy itself.”

Call for media protection ahead of 2027 elections

The coordinated messages from Jubilee, Wiper and other political leaders highlighted the role of the media in shaping public discourse as the country approaches the 2027 general election.

The statements also underscored calls for continued protection of journalists while maintaining professional standards in reporting during heightened political activity.

The global commemoration was marked under the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” with leaders urging strengthened cooperation between media stakeholders and state institutions.
