Gachagua marks World Press Freedom Day, urges responsible journalism ahead of 2027 polls
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has joined the world in marking World Press Freedom Day 2026, calling for a strengthened commitment to responsible and objective journalism as Kenya heads toward the 2027 general election.
In a statement on his X account on Sunday, May 3, 2026, Gachagua highlighted the theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” praising journalists for their role in informing the public and safeguarding democracy.
Gachagua lauded members of the media for their sacrifices in reporting stories that impact society.

“We celebrate responsible and objective journalism that informs, educates, and communicates,” Gachagua stated.
“I join the World to celebrate all members of the 4th Estate who sacrifice their time and risk their lives to tell the world stories that touch humanity, save lives, protect our environment and above all uplift our spirits. We remain indebted to you.”
Readiness ahead of 2027 polls
Gachagua noted that press freedom in Kenya has improved over the years, attributing the gains to persistent efforts by journalists and media stakeholders.
He urged journalists to remain attentive to citizens’ concerns and ensure balanced reporting as political temperatures rise ahead of the next general election.

“Here in Kenya, Press Freedom has come a long way. You fought to earn it. Do not let your guard down, especially now that Kenyans are yearning for change. Listen to Kenyans and tell their stories. The Future of Kenyans need to be at peace, especially ahead of the 10th August 2027 General Election,” Gachagua said.
Press freedom is a democracy
“The Freedom of the press doesn’t only mean the right to be left free but also a function to exercise responsibility and objectivity. A free Press is not only a pointer to Democracy, but it is also Democracy itself,” Gachagua said.
