President William Ruto has launched a fresh attack on the Opposition, accusing its leaders of undermining the country’s economic progress and posing a threat to the future of Kenya.

Speaking in Amagoro Town, Teso North Constituency, Busia County, on Sunday, July 26, 2026, the President urged Kenyans to support his administration, describing it as a transformative government focused on growing the economy and creating opportunities for all.

“The Opposition are an existential problem to our country. They are not only a threat to our economy but also to the future of our children,” Ruto said.

Ruto calls for support

The Head of State called on citizens to rally behind the Kenya Kwanza administration, arguing that national unity was essential for the successful implementation of development projects and economic reforms.

“We ask Kenyans to rally behind this government, a transformative administration that is driving growth and expanding opportunities for everyone,” he said.

Ruto further criticized those opposed to his administration, saying they should not obstruct the country’s development agenda.

“Those who are not for progress and development should not stand in the way of our country’s transformation,” he added.

United opposition on Ruto’s budget

Ruto’s remarks come against the backdrop of an increasingly charged political environment, with opposition leaders stepping up criticism of the government’s handling of the economy, taxation and the rising cost of living.

Last month, the United Opposition unveiled an alternative 2026/27 budget, proposing tax relief measures, increased funding for education and healthcare, and cuts to government expenditure, arguing that the Kenya Kwanza administration’s fiscal policies have placed a heavy burden on households.

In its Alternative People’s Budget for the 2026/27 financial year, the coalition proposes reducing the fiscal deficit from Ksh1.11 trillion, equivalent to 5.3 per cent of GDP, to Ksh593.5 billion, or 2.8 per cent of GDP, while increasing total revenue through tax compliance measures, contract savings and asset realisation rather than introducing new taxes.

Ruto defends his administration

The President has, however, consistently defended his administration’s economic reforms, insisting they are aimed at stabilising the economy, creating jobs and accelerating development under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

In recent remarks at State House, Ruto maintained that despite criticism and heightened political debate, Kenya remains on a path of progress and describes the country as a “robustly democratic” nation where citizens enjoy freedom of expression, while urging responsible public discourse.
