Wiper Patriotic Front party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has declared that Kenyan voters can no longer be influenced by money or political handouts, arguing that the recent Ol Kalou by-election and the rise of the Gen Z movement have ushered in a new era of political awareness and citizen engagement.

Speaking on Sunday, July 26, 2026, during a church service at Faith Baptist Presbyterian Church in Tseikuru, Kitui County, Kalonzo urged leaders to embrace servant leadership, integrity, and humility, saying Kenya’s future depends on leaders who prioritize the interests of citizens over personal gain.

The former Vice President, who was attending worship at his home church, reflected on his deep-rooted relationship with the congregation, recalling childhood visits and years of fellowship.

He said faith has remained a guiding principle throughout his public service and leadership journey.

“Leadership should be anchored on justice, humility, and service to the people,” Kalonzo told the congregation.

Strong political message

Kalonzo said the outcome of the recently concluded hot Ol Kalou by-election demonstrated that Kenyans are becoming increasingly resistant to vote-buying and political manipulation.

According to him, attempts to influence voters through financial inducements are losing their effectiveness because citizens now understand that public funds belong to them and should be invested in improving their livelihoods rather than financing political campaigns.

He argued that the election reflected a growing political maturity among Kenyans, adding that the electorate is demanding accountability, transparency, and genuine development from those seeking public office.

Political pundits have increasingly opined that Kenyan voters, particularly younger citizens, are becoming more issue-driven and less influenced by traditional campaign tactics.

Gen Z Movement reshaping Kenya’s politics

The Wiper leader also pointed to the Gen Z movement as one of the most defining moments in Kenya’s recent political history.

Kalonzo said the movement has fundamentally changed the relationship between citizens and leadership by encouraging greater civic awareness, public participation, and accountability.

According to Kalonzo, together with the Ol Kalou by-election, the youth-led movement demonstrates that Kenyans are becoming more informed, vocal, and determined to shape the country’s democratic future.

He urged political leaders across the divide to recognise these changes and respond by offering credible leadership rather than relying on outdated political strategies. Lessons from Former President Mwai Kibaki

Kalonzo also challenged leaders to embrace humility by citing former President Mwai Kibaki.

He recalled that after the construction of the present-day Thika Superhighway, Kibaki reportedly declined proposals to have the road named after him, choosing instead to place national interest above personal recognition.

Kalonzo described the decision as an example of selfless leadership, saying today’s leaders should focus on leaving behind a legacy of service rather than seeking personal glory. He maintained that public office should remain an opportunity to improve people’s lives rather than a platform for self-promotion.
