As the postmortem and inquiry into Kenya’s humiliating 3-1 defeat against Gambia in the 2026 World Cup qualifier continue, how rapidly tables can turn and players move from hero to villain is an aspect of the game that probably needs to be studied.

The chastening loss prompted a section of fans to opt for the path of least resistance by castigating Harambee Stars’ long-serving skipper, Michael Olunga, for a tepid display, at least by their individual high standards.

Budding career

As others suggested that he call time on his international career and backed Ryan Ogam to take over the lead striker’s role, others seemed to engage in a bit of a stretch by casting aspersions on the standards of the Qatari Stars League, where he plies his trade. These can only be detrimental to not only the national team but also to individual players, whether new or long-serving members of the national outfit.

This is a typical case of why the professional footballers the world over need to offer little thought to social media discussion and opinions.

What has escaped the notice of many is that the budding striker’s career is just getting started, and just like the Olunga and Dennis Oliech of the recent past, proper guidance and direction will also turn for the good.

Professionally speaking, Ogam, who just earned a move to the Austrian league, is just beginning his career. He will need to learn the ropes, and much of it comes when he has a player of the likes of Olunga’s calibre to guide and nurture him along.

It’s such guidance and sharpening that makes the next better striker and not the heat of the moment aimed to scuttle players’ confidence.

Coach Benni McCarthy, while speaking prior to the CHAN games, tipped Ogam as the country’s next star who could take over from Olunga.

Olunga about Ogam’s quality

In his wisdom as a striker of phenomenal quality during his heyday, McCarthy comprehends why Ogam needs strikers such as Olunga around him. It is imperative that fans, too, adopt such a futuristic view.

Olunga spoke highly of the new striker’s impact following his heroics from the CHAN competitions.

“Ryan is a player who has quality, and he has shown it in the national team. Just like any other player given the opportunity. We will work together and try to get the best out of each other, which I believe is in the best interest of the country,” he stated before the Gambia tie.

Perhaps Kenyan fans need a reminder of the age-old football adage, “My team, whether we win or lose.” Indeed, the Harambee Stars can do better and far better with fans who will stand by at all costs.
