Hussein Khalid: Bob Njagi was arrested and presented in court over treason
Human rights activist Hussein Khalid has raised concern over the arrest and detention of fellow activist Bob Njagi during a live television interview on June 25, 2026.
Khalid has stated that Bob Njagi was arrested on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, and later presented before a court in Kajiado on Thursday.
He said the information available to activists indicates that the matter has attracted significant attention from both legal and civic actors following the arrest.
According to Khalid, police informed the court that Njagi is under investigation over claims related to treason and may face formal charges depending on the outcome of ongoing inquiries. He added that investigators have linked the case to matters they are still examining.
Khalid further noted that police requested seven days to continue detaining Njagi to facilitate further investigations. The court granted the request, allowing authorities additional time to conclude their preliminary probe.
“The information we have is that Bob Njagi was arrested yesterday and was presented before a court in Kajiado today. The police claim they are investigating him on allegations of treason and may charge him accordingly. They also requested seven days to detain him for further investigations,” Khalid noted.

Court grants police request for seven-day detention
According to information shared during the proceedings, police requested seven days to hold Njagi in custody to complete investigations. The court granted the request, allowing investigators additional time to examine the circumstances surrounding the allegations.
Khalid noted that multiple activists were engaged in related civic activities at the time, which contributed to limited clarity on the initial details of the arrest.
According to preliminary reports, police said Njagi was being held in connection with a social media videoreportedly calling on young people to participate in planned demonstrations scheduled for June 25, 2026, in Kitengela, Kajiado County.
Authorities described the video as potentially inciting public disorder and said security measures had been put in place to prevent unrest during the planned events marking the anniversary of the 2024 Gen Z protests.
Activists pledge follow-up as detention continues
Khalid said activists would continue monitoring Njagi’s welfare and follow up on the legal process to ensure transparency in the handling of the case. He stated that efforts would be made to establish the specific charges and circumstances leading to the arrest while maintaining contact with legal representatives involved in the matter.
Human rights activists and legal organisations have indicated that they will continue tracking developments in the case as it proceeds through the judicial process, particularly in relation to broader concerns about civic space and protest-related arrests.
