KDF officers to access 4% mortgages in new housing scheme
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel are set to benefit from affordable home ownership opportunities after the launch of a new mortgage scheme offering financing at about a four per cent interest rate.
The initiative was unveiled on Thursday after a partnership between the Kenya Defence Forces, the Civil Servants Housing Scheme Fund, the Affordable Housing Board and KCB Bank Kenya Limited to provide military officers with easier access to housing across the country.
Scheme targets better welfare for soldiers
In a statement shared on Thursday, July 16, 2026, on the Facebook account by Principle Secretary for Defence, Patrick Mariru, after the launch, he said that the programme marks a significant milestone in improving the welfare of service members who dedicate their lives to protecting the nation.
“This morning, I joined the Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, Gen Charles Kahariri, and the Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development, Mr Charles Hinga, at the KCB Leadership Centre, Karen, for the launch of the Kenya Defence Forces Mortgage Scheme,” Mariru said.

He added that the partnership would enable KDF personnel to access affordable mortgage financing and home ownership opportunities anywhere in Kenya.
“The framework will enable our Kenya Defence Forces personnel to access affordable mortgage financing and home ownership opportunities – at about 4% interest rate,” he said.
Government expands affordable housing programme
Mariru said providing decent housing for military personnel is part of broader government efforts to improve living standards for public servants while strengthening the Affordable Housing Programme.
He noted that better housing enhances family stability, improves the well-being of service members and supports their readiness in carrying out national duties.
“The welfare of our service men and women remains a key priority. As they dedicate their lives to safeguarding our nation, we must continue investing in initiatives that improve their quality of life,” the CS said.
Partnership brings public and private sectors together
The tripartite Memorandum of Understanding signed during the event is expected to create a structured pathway for KDF personnel to own homes through affordable financing arrangements.
Mariru said the partnership demonstrates the importance of collaboration between government institutions and the private sector in delivering sustainable solutions for citizens.
The initiative adds KDF personnel to the list of groups targeted under the government’s affordable housing agenda as Kenya continues efforts to expand access to home ownership.
