Safaricom has cautioned M-PESA customers against approving unexpected payment prompts, reminding users that their M-PESA PIN is the final line of defence against fraud.

Taking to their X handle on Wednesday, July 16, 2026, the telecommunications company urged customers to take a moment to verify every transaction before entering their PIN, warning that fraudsters often exploit users who approve prompts without checking the payment details.

Through its “Jiulize, Hii ni Ukweli?” campaign, Safaricom is encouraging customers to remain vigilant whenever they receive an M-PESA prompt.

The company has advised users to first establish whether they initiated the transaction and to confirm the PayBill number, till number, or business name displayed on the prompt before authorising any payment.

Safaricom: Your PIN is your last line of defence

“Your M-PESA PIN is your final line of defence. Before approving any prompt, take a moment to confirm who you’re paying and why,” Safaricom said.

The company explained that users should never enter their PIN simply because a payment request has appeared on their phones. Instead, customers are encouraged to ask themselves whether they recognise the recipient and whether the transaction is one they intended to make. If the prompt is unfamiliar or unexpected, it should be declined immediately.

Stay alert to mobile money scams

Safaricom noted that scammers increasingly rely on unsuspecting users approving payment requests without verifying the details. Since no M-PESA transaction can be completed without the customer’s PIN, exercising caution before entering it remains the most effective way to prevent financial loss.

The company further advised customers to report suspicious payment requests through its official support channels instead of approving them or sharing their PIN with anyone.

“If you receive unexpected payment requests or prompts you don’t recognise, decline them and report the incident through our official support channels,” Safaricom said.

The awareness campaign is part of Safaricom’s continued efforts to educate M-PESA customers on safe digital financial practices as mobile money scams become increasingly sophisticated.

By encouraging customers to pause and verify every transaction, the company hopes to reduce fraud and ensure users remain in full control of their M-PESA accounts.
