Kiharu Member of Parliament (MP) Ndindi Nyoro has called on the government to urgently lower fuel taxes, warning that high levies are causing unnecessary strain on Kenyan households. He says the current fuel pricing system fails to reflect global market shifts, leaving citizens to shoulder the burden of taxes that should have been adjusted months ago.

In a statement shared on X on Monday, March 9, 2026, Ndindi Nyoro highlighted how fuel brought into the country when global prices were falling has not translated into relief for ordinary motorists.

“EPRA lazima wajue kwamba wakitaka kuongeza bei ya mafuta Kenya lazima kwanza wanamaliza consigment ile ilikuja kwa bei ya chini. So as Kenyans we do not expect EPRA waanze kuwadanganya Wakenya na kuongeza bei ya mafuta kwa sababu bei ya mafuta from the month of March to April ni mafuta ambayo ililetwa Kenya kabla bei ya mafuta ianze kupanda,” Nyoro said.

He warned that any attempts to raise fuel prices this week would be unfair, given that the imported fuel should have been sold at the lower global rate.

“Kwahivyo hio ukora mnapanga kuongeza bei ya mafuta this week tutaonanan na nyinyi. Mafuta ikishuka globally Wakenya hawakuona hataikishuke, inashukishwa na shilingi 1 au 2 na si kama vile mafuta iliteremka globally,” he added.

Nyoro also criticised the government for the cumulative increases over the past two years, noting that taxes on fuel have doubled while citizens have seen minimal benefit.

“Hio ni kwa sababu in the first 2years serikali ikaongeza mafuta kwa 8%, kitambo ilikuwa 8% wakaongeza 8% ingine ikawa 16%,” he explained.

He stressed that Kenyans are calling for fairness in fuel pricing and immediate adjustments to cushion households from rising living costs.
Nyoro concluded by urging the government to act swiftly, stating that fuel pricing policies must reflect global market realities and protect citizens from unnecessary financial pressure.
