Former Gatundu South Member of Parliament (MP) Moses Kuria has maintained that ex-President Uhuru Kenyatta still has a key role to play in the Mount Kenya region’s politics, two and a half years after his retirement.

Speaking on a local TV station on Tuesday night, August 19, 2025, the former Trade Cabinet Secretary and Senior President William Ruto’s advisor argued that despite having exited active politics, Uhuru still commands influence in the mountain through his position as leader of the Jubilee Party. He dismissed the notion that the region’s leadership could easily shift to one individual, describing Mt Kenya as a diverse political landscape.

“Uhuru Kenyatta has a role to play in the Mt Kenya region. He is still the leader of Jubilee. For very liberal people like the Mt Kenya people, to imagine that people can fit into one is unfathomable. Therefore, all these parties have space,” Kuria remarked.

Kuria’s statement comes amid Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua being perceived as the region’s political spearheads ahead of the 2027 general election.

Kuria, however, downplayed any political supremacy battles, urging leaders from the region to embrace inclusivity instead of political brinkmanship. He emphasised that every politician has a right to chart their own course, provided they remain within the confines of the law.

This is after a bitter fallout between President William Ruto and former DP Rigathi Gachagua, which led to the formation of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) by Gachagua in 2025, who is keen on making the incumbent a one-term president come 2027.

Kuria cautions Gachagua

However, Kuria has cautioned Rigathi Gachagua, who is expected in the country from the United States of America on Thursday, August 21, 2025, to exercise his political right responsibly.

“Gachagua has every right to practise his politics in the best way he knows how as long as he is not contravening the law. This country does not belong to only politicians. We need to carry out our politics in a better way,” he said.

The remarks come at a time when Mt Kenya politics remain fractured, with leaders split between different parties and political camps. While Gachagua has attempted to consolidate himself as the region’s spokesperson, his fallout with some of President William Ruto’s allies has complicated his standing.

Kuria’s declaration that Uhuru still retains influence may embolden a section of leaders loyal to the former president, further deepening the region’s political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.
