Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has projected that the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) will secure at least 20 governors, 20 senators, 145 Members of Parliament, 24 women representatives and more than 1,450 Members of County Assembly in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on July 17, 2026, during a press conference in a thanksgiving celebration after DCP’s victory in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, Gachagua said the party had set ambitious targets as it expands its national presence ahead of the next polls.

“We are targeting to have 20 governors, 20 senators, 145 Members of Parliament, 24 women representatives and over 1,450 MCAs in the 2027 General Election,” he said.

The former deputy president described the Ol Kalou by-election as a key test for the party, saying it demonstrated the strength of DCP’s grassroots mobilisation.

Ol Kalou victory boosts DCP

Gachagua said the party’s candidate, Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, prevailed despite what he described as an intensive campaign mounted by the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

He said the by-election attracted national attention, with senior government officials taking part in campaigns.

According to Gachagua, the outcome showed that voters remained firm in their choice.

“The people stood their ground and said no,” he said. “Money cannot alter the fate of William R in 2027.”

He also said, “Violence and intimidation cannot alter the fate of William R. All power belongs to the people of Kenya and their will reigns supreme.”

Gachagua further described the by-election as a dress rehearsal for the 2027 General Election, saying the result had strengthened DCP’s confidence as it prepares to field candidates across the country.

Party eyes national expansion

The former deputy president said DCP, which was launched less than a year ago, had continued to grow its presence in different parts of the country.

He noted that the party had now secured its first Member of Parliament and had also won seats held by Members of County Assembly in counties including Narok and Kakamega.

Gachagua also said the party would continue conducting what he described as credible nominations to strengthen its candidates ahead of the next elections. He expressed confidence that Kenyans would make independent political decisions in 2027.

Mount Kenya vote

Gachagua also revisited the 2022 General Election, saying the Mount Kenya region played a significant role in President William Ruto’s victory.

“Mount Kenya is working hard to mobilize and deliver at least 7.1 million votes in 2027 on our own so that we can wash away the sin we imposed on the republic,” he said.

He also referred to the biblical story of David and Goliath as he reflected on the Ol Kalou outcome, attributing the victory to God, the party’s candidate and the voters.

The Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election was held following the death of former area MP David Njuguna Kiaraho. DCP candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru defeated UDA’s Samuel Muchina Nyaga to hand the party its first parliamentary seat since its formation. The result has intensified political activity in the Mount Kenya region as parties begin preparations for the 2027 General Election.
