The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced it will conduct a comprehensive post-election review of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election held on July 16, 2026, saying the findings will inform preparations for the 2027 General Election.

In a press statement issued on Friday, July 17, 2026, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon thanked voters in Ol Kalou Constituency for turning out to participate in the by-election, where voter turnout stood at 57 per cent.

The commission also expressed appreciation to its staff, election officials, political parties, candidates, security agencies, civil society organisations, the media and development partners for their contribution to the electoral process.

“The Commission expresses its gratitude to the people of Ol Kalou Constituency for turning out to exercise their democratic right,” the statement said.

Review to identify lessons for future elections

IEBC said the post-election review will assess the conduct of the by-election, identify areas that performed well and highlight aspects that require improvement ahead of the next General Election.

The commission said the exercise is part of its constitutional mandate under Article 88(4)(h), which requires it to facilitate the observation, monitoring and evaluation of elections.

According to the statement, the review will consider reports from stakeholders and incorporate recommendations aimed at strengthening future electoral processes.

“Credible elections require collaboration and good faith from all actors including political parties, security agencies, administrators, civil society, media and the public,” the commission said.

“Trust in our elections is built not only through technical excellence but also collective responsibility of all actors to protect the integrity of the process.”

IEBC said the findings will guide planning for the 2027 General Election, including improvements in election management and stakeholder engagement.

The commission noted that by-elections provide an opportunity to assess election operations, including logistics, polling station management, voter education, security coordination and results management.

Petition timeline and voter registration

The commission reminded candidates and voters that any petition challenging the validity of the Ol Kalou by-election must be filed within 28 days after the declaration of results, in accordance with Section 76 of the Elections Act.

It added that voter registration in Ol Kalou Constituency will resume after the expiry of the statutory petition period to ensure the voters’ register remains accurate.

IEBC also called on political leaders, candidates and members of the public to continue promoting peace and issue-based politics as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.

The commission said safeguarding the integrity of elections requires the participation of all stakeholders and urged Kenyans to remain engaged in strengthening the country’s democratic processes.

The IEBC announcement comes after the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, triggered by the death of former MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, in which Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru defeated United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah.

Following the declaration of results, Muchina conceded defeat and congratulated Waweru, who will now represent the constituency in the National Assembly.

IEBC said the post-election evaluation will generate recommendations to strengthen voter registration, technology deployment, election staff training and coordination with stakeholders ahead of the 2027 General Election.

With less than a year before the next national polls, the commission said the review will help improve future electoral activities while reinforcing public confidence in Kenya’s electoral system.
