Ichung’wah backs calls to declare Kiambu a region separate from Mt Kenya
By Mabonga Makhanu, August 27, 2025National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has joined calls to have Kiambu County declared a region on its own, separate from Mt Kenya.
Speaking during a meeting at State House where President William Ruto hosted a delegation of grassroots leaders from Mt. Kenya on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, Ichung’wah told the Head of State that although Kiambu is often regarded as part of the Mt. Kenya region, the only mountains its residents can actually see and boast of are Ngong Hills and Kilimambogo.
The majority leader emphasised that Kiambu should be recognised as a region in its own right, a declaration that was met with overwhelming approval from the grassroots leaders present.
He went on to assure the President of Kiambu’s unwavering political support, noting that the county has a significant voting base that the Head of State can count on.
“We have been christened the people of Mt Kenya, lakini ile Milima pekee hawa watu wa Kiambu wanaona ni Ngong Hills na Kilimambogo, na wamesema wao ni a region by themselves; Kiambu is a region on its own,” Ichung’wah stated
Kiambu MPs demands
This demand followed a community engagement at Karatu on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, which brought together leaders from several constituencies.
The leaders collectively expressed the need for Kiambu to stand independently as a region.

Gatundu North MP Njoroge Karuria argued that Kiambu holds a huge number of voters, with over 1.4 million registered voters, equivalent to the combined voter population of Nyeri, Murang’a, Laikipia, and Kirinyaga counties.
He emphasised that Kiambu should not be bundled together under the general label of Mount Kenya whenever President William Ruto visits.
“Instead, Kiambu should be recognised as a distinct region with its own development agenda, cabinet ministers, principal secretaries, and budgetary allocations, separate from other counties in the Mount Kenya region. He stressed that Kiambu’s political influence does not extend beyond the Chania River.” Gatundu North MP said.
Other MPs who were present then in that meeting also joined this call, insisting that, judging from the county’s population and size, it should be declared a region on its own
