Audit exposes huge mess in Kiambu county

A recent audit conducted in Kiambu has exposed glaring financial irregularities totaling to billions raising concerns about management of public finances in the county.
The examination of the county’s financial state by the Auditor General’s office for the financial year 2022-2023 revealed blatant financial anomalies within the local administration, including instances of misappropriation, fraudulent activities, and financial mismanagement.
The audit report that scrutinized financial records, transactions, and expenditures sought to identify any discrepancies or lapses in accountability.
Estimated billions have been identified by the audit as being subject to irregularities casting a shadow over the county’s financial integrity.
Among the areas of concern is the unsupported expenditure on use of goods and services.
According to the audit report seen by People Daily, statements of receipts and payments reflect an expenditure of Sh 2,005,432,642 under the use of goods and services.
The amount includes Sh114,144,855 and Sh71,201,900 in respect of domestic travel and subsistence, and hospitality supplies and services which differ with ledger amounts of Sh 114,068,855 and Sh 71,101,900 resulting to an unreconciled variance of Sh 76,000 and Sh100,000 respectively.
From the over Sh 2 billion expenditure, Sh50,640,448 and Sh142,010,080 were spent on printing, advertising and information supplies and services and other operating expenses respectively.
