Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has warned the government against weaponising the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) against leaders who do not side with the government.

Speaking in Machakos on Sunday, May 18, the former vice President said Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya was on EACC’s radar, adding that the anti-graft body had been granted a search warrant to search his properties, apprehend him, and then later release him.

“The EACC should not be weaponized against leaders who are simply doing their job or choosing to stand firm in their principles like Trans Nzoia Governor Natembeya We must protect our democratic space and allow institutions to function independently, free from political interference,” Kalonzo stated.

“If you are the governor and you don’t toe the line of those in leadership of the highest level, they will send EACC after you, but I want to say that the commission should not be used.”

This comes days after some leaders affiliated to the Kenya Kwanza government called for the impeachment of the governor, following his inceasant criticism against the government.

“Governor Natembeya is threatened as we speak, and on Monday, which is tomorrow, they have obtained a search warrant to go and search his house. They just want to apprehend him and release him so that they may embarrass him before the people of Trans Nzoia,” Kalonzo said.

In April 2025, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei made calls for Natembeya to be impeached, accusing him of stoking tribal animosity, division, poor development and corruption.

“Governor Natembeya should be impeached for stoking tribal animosity, division, poor development and corruption allegations. These offences are impeachable under the Constitution of Kenya 2010 for violating Articles 10, 27, 73, 74, 75 and 174,” Cherargei stated.

“He is not fit & suitable to be Governor of Trans Nzoia County BUT suitable to be chief tribal chief mobiliser to practice his tribal rhetoric.”

In response, Natembeya accused the government of planning of sending him to prison, something he said he was not afraid of.

“Don’t fix an innocent person and let the guilty go free. It is biblically wrong. Those fighting me will face the wrath of God. Power is temporary. You may have it today, but tomorrow you may not. Let us run this country as brothers, not political enemies,” Natembeya said.

“These threats to send me to prison don’t scare me. Those facilities were built for people who’ve committed crimes. I’m not worried if someone wants to fix and send me there.”
