Kiambu Members of Parliament, including Gatundu North MP, Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe, Kiambu Woman Representative Anne Wamuratha, and Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a, are now pushing for Kiambu County to be declared a region and separated from the larger Mount Kenya region.

This demand follows a community engagement at Karatu on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, which brought together leaders from several constituencies.

The leaders collectively expressed the need for Kiambu to stand independently as a region.

Gatundu North MP Njoroge karuria

Gatundu North MP Njoroge Karuria argued that Kiambu holds a huge number of voters, with over 1.4 million registered voters, equivalent to the combined voter population of Nyeri, Murang’a, Laikipia, and Kirinyaga counties.

He emphasised that Kiambu should not be bundled together under the general label of Mount Kenya whenever President William Ruto visits.

Instead, Kiambu should be recognised as a distinct region with its own development agenda, cabinet ministers, principal secretaries, and budgetary allocations, separate from other counties in the Mount Kenya region. He stressed that Kiambu’s political influence does not extend beyond the Chania River.

hatutaki serikali yetu ikiongozwa na President wetu William ruto akuwe akisema akienda Mt kenya ameenda Kiambuenda Kiam tunataka kusimama kama region, tunataka maendeleo yetu ma minister wetu,  PS wetu, na pesa yetu, lakini isiwekwe pamoja na pesa yetu. Wao wapewe pesa yao alafu sisi tupewe yetu, kwa sababu sisi uongozi wetu haupitangi mto wa Chania,” Said Gatundu North MP.

Wamuratha

Kiambu Woman Representative Anne Wamuratha added that Kiambu has grown to match the size and diversity of Nairobi.

She noted that it has become a cosmopolitan county with a high influx of residents.

She cited Ruiru, which alone has eight wards equivalent to some entire counties, and pointed out that Kiambu has one of the highest vote counts in the country, second only to Nairobi.

She argued that the national government should recognise the county’s electoral strength and population size when allocating resources and formulating development plans.

Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe

Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe supported the call, stating that Kiambu has a large number of school-going children, a high population, and many residents who work in Nairobi but live in Kiambu.

He emphasised that just like the capital city, Kiambu deserves increased funding to meet its growing demands and improve public service delivery.

Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a, who was also present at the meeting, backed the proposal alongside the other leaders.
