Political activist Morara Kebaso has come out to take a swipe at the ongoing crowdfunding for several politicians, saying that when Kenyans contribute their funds to a specific politician, it makes them answerable to the public.

While speaking during an interview with a local media station, on Friday, July 24, 2026, the Borabu MP hopeful went ahead to state that the politician will always be held accountable by the same public in any move he takes.

Morara, who in the past, at the height of the Gen Z protests, was also a beneficiary of crowdfunding, raising over Ksh6.5 million, stated that he finds himself in the same position. That is why, according to him, Kenyans are always concerned about his political journey.

“From raising funds from the public, it put me in a position where I was accountable to the public. When you raise money from the people, it puts you in a position where you are answerable to them.”

Linda Mwananchi’s fundraising strategy

This comes at a time when the Linda Mwananchi team views crowdfunding as the primary avenue through which their team leader and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna can bankroll his presidential campaign.

This saw the youthful politician unveil his Paybill number for the public to contribute to the movement’s activities. After 24 hours, Sifuna reported that the account had raised over Ksh1 million.

He urged Kenyans to send whatever they can to help fund his movement’s operations. Sifuna also revealed that boda boda riders around his Siaka home have taken the task into their own hands, setting up pay bills in boda boda stages so people in the villages can contribute.

Lawyers back Sifuna’s fundraiser

Former Westlands MP Fred Gumo, who has come out in support of Sifuna’s presidential ambitions, echoed these sentiments, stating that lawyers drawn from the Western Kenya region have also set up a separate Paybill within the legal fraternity to raise funds for Sifuna’s activities.

On the other hand, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, who recently aligned himself with the Sifuna movement, urged Western Kenya locals to contribute to the Paybill.

With the government intensifying its presence in Western Kenya following Sifuna’s rise and attempting to splash money to lure locals into supporting the state, Natembeya urged residents to take half of any money offered to them for personal use and send the rest to the movement.

Crowdfunding in Old Kalou

Crowdfunding was also evident in Ol Kalou during a heated by-election, where the Democracy for Citizens (DCP) candidate, Sammy Ngotho, saw locals contributing to his campaign by whatever means possible after he came under attack from opponents in the ruling party who had vast resources.
