Posta Rangers head coach John Kamau has downplayed the team’s fine start to the 2023-24 FKF Premier League campaign insisting their focus is to take it a game at a time.

The Mailmen have started the season on a high note that has seen them win four straight matches from the five played so far and are sitting at the summit of the 18-team table with 13 points, four more than second-placed and champions Gor Mahia.

They started off with a 0-0 draw against Bidco United but turned on the screw to win their next four matches – a 3-0 victory against Kenya Police, a 3-1 win against Sofapaka, a 1-0 win against promoted Murang’a Seal FC and Saturday’s 1-0 win against Kariobangi Sharks.

Despite the commendable start that has seen several pundits tipping them to lift their maiden league title, Kamau has insisted his side will not get carried away with the fact they are topping the log but will continue to win their respective matches and wait for the outcome at the end of the season.

“It is a tough league, a very close league if you analyse the table standings from top to the bottom, and not easy for any team to win four matches in a row (like we have done),” said Kamau when asked on his team’s prospects to win the title after the Sharks victory, adding: “We want to keep the momentum going, I don’t want my players to get carried because we are on top of the log, I have asked them to take it a game at a time and see what will happen at the end.”

However, Kamau took his time to lavish praise on his players and further insisted they deserve to be at the helm of the league because of the good football they are displaying.

“My team deserves to be where they are (at the top) it is not by luck or by fluke, we are playing good football we are doing great,” he said, adding: “My players are doing everything to win matches and this is good for me and the team and it is no mean achievement, we will try as much as possible to win our matches and the boys certainly need a pat on the back for the amazing start.”

Meanwhile, Sharks coach William Muluya has called on his players to stay alert after blaming lack of concentration for the goal they conceded against Posta Rangers.

“We played well against Posta, we pushed them hard, they have a good team but we gave away a goal because of defensive lapses, we did not defend well, we were not alert but from my point of view, we deserved a point from the game,” said Muluya.

Kamau and Posta will hope to make it five wins from the last five matches when they take on Nzoia Sugar at Thika Municipal Stadium on Friday while Sharks will hope to bounce back to winning ways against Ulinzi Stars at Ulinzi Complex on the same day.
